Why the question after the data matters

Most dashboards answer the first question. How many? How much? Up or down?

The first answer is almost never the interesting part. The interesting part is the second question, the why or the compared to what, the one you only think to ask once the first number is sitting in front of you.

Working with data taught me that the job isn’t producing numbers. It’s staying curious for one more question than feels necessary.
